Sustainable tooth brushing – bamboo, activated carbon etc.

Nowadays, one can say there are two types of toothbrushes. One is manual toothbrushes, where the bristles are guided over the teeth by hand movements. On the other hand, there are also electric toothbrushes, which are simply placed against the teeth and carry out the brushing movements themselves.

Almost all models of these two types of toothbrushes are made of plastic - but not all of them. Have you ever wondered if there are alternative materials for making toothbrushes? The amazing answer is that there are, for example, toothbrushes made of wood with natural bristles. They have the unbeatable advantage that – unlike plastic toothbrushes – they can be recycled more easily and in a much more environmentally friendly way.

It is no big secret anymore that a huge amount of plastic waste ends up in the sea. The islands of plastic garbage in the Pacific known as the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ are probably the best known of these oceanic garbage accumulations. This is one of the reasons why it is now a highly recommended option to switch to plastic-free products. This way you can do both nature and climate a favour. It has been proven that the littered oceans are responsible for climate change. But what are the concrete possibilities?

First of all, you should make sure that you use your current plastic toothbrushes until you would dispose of them anyway. Everything else is a waste of plastic. But when you get to that point, you might want to consider trying bamboo toothbrushes. They work just as well as regular plastic toothbrushes, but are made of environmentally friendly materials. For example, the bristles are made of nylon and even the packaging is plastic-free and therefore as sustainable as possible. Are you curious? Take a look around in our Smile Shop, there you will find just those toothbrushes for a small price.

Can toothpaste also be sustainable and environmentally friendly?

Well, it is not necessarily the toothpaste that is not environmentally friendly, but rather the tube. In many cases, the tube is also made of plastic. An alternative to this is the metal can with powdered activated carbon. By the way, you can also get this in our Smile Shop.

However, the activated carbon powder for the teeth has also other advantages: It can replace conventional toothpaste. This is because the activated carbon has a rough surface structure. Therefore, dirt particles that have settled on the teeth can adhere much better to the powder granules. The teeth are cleaned more effectively.

But now you might also wonder whether your teeth are able to cope with the activated carbon powder at all. To find out, you should best visit your dentist or oral surgeon and ask him about it. He will be able to tell you whether your teeth are in such a condition that you can use the activated carbon powder without any concerns. Unfortunately, the problem is that your teeth can be sensitive to the powder if they are irritated or generally very sensitive.

What are the advantages of regular dental hygiene with activated carbon powder?

Activated carbon powder is generally known to not only clean your teeth thoroughly on a regular basis over the duration of use, but also to gradually lighten them. The advantage of this is that it can replace the so-called bleaching at the dentist. In bleaching treatment, the teeth are lightened up using a special technique. However, this procedure is very expensive and your health insurance will most likely not support you financially. This is mainly due to the fact that bleaching is not a health-promoting measure, but an embellishment measure.

For this reason, the so-called whitening kit is especially recommended. You can order this in our Smile Shop – it consists of a bamboo wood toothbrush and a can of activated carbon powder. This way you can make your teeth look better in a short time, environmentally friendly and for little money.
