Hygienic handling of dental splints: This is what really matters!
In many cases, transparent dental splints, also called aligners, are a subtle alternative to conventional braces that sit firmly on the teeth. Tooth splints have the decisive advantages that they are made to fit exactly and are very thin. This makes them much more comfortable to wear during treatment than braces. For eating and drinking as well as brushing the teeth, the aligners should of course be removed. Otherwise you could not optimally meet your oral hygiene and also the care of the braces.
There are a few useful hints regarding storage, handling and care that can help you to ensure the durability and especially the effectiveness of the aligners. In general, you should also keep in mind that the therapy can only be successful if you wear the aligners regularly and for as long as recommended.
Inserting and taking out the aligners
First of all, it is essential that you wash your hands thoroughly before inserting and taking out the aligners. This way you have already prevented the danger of germs and pathogens very well. When inserting the aligners, you should make sure that you do not mix up the respective splints for the upper and lower jaws. The aligners should also be worn in a certain order so that the teeth can really successively move out of their misalignment.
When you take the splint out again, make sure that it does not bend or twist. Sharp objects as aids should be avoided at all costs, as they can damage aligners and especially your teeth. Have a look around in our Smile Shop, there are the so-called Outtakers.
The daily care of the dental splints
In general, the aligners should be cleaned with a soft toothbrush and some toothpaste. Mouth rinses or denture cleaners should be avoided to prevent damage to the aligners. Hot water can also be harmful because it can deform the splints. After cleaning, you should rinse the aligners with cold or lukewarm water before you insert them again.
The same applies when you drink water. You can drink normal tap or mineral water without hesitation if you wear the aligners. However, hot drinks such as tea or coffee should be avoided. For cleaning the rails, there are also specially made cleaning solutions. These can be used whenever necessary, usually once a week.
General information on oral hygiene
As already mentioned, you should take the Aligners out for eating and drinking, except of course when drinking water. But it is also important that you brush your teeth thoroughly after each meal. This includes flossing and interdental brushing. If you don't have the opportunity to do so, for example at work, it may be sufficient to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after eating and to clean the aligners under lukewarm running water. However, you should clean them with a toothbrush and toothpaste as soon as you get home, just like you should then brush your teeth.
The reason for this is that leftover food can cause centres of germination between teeth and dental splints. As soon as pathogens have settled on the teeth, the aligners act as a kind of protective cover for them.
Transport and storage of the dental splints
If you have already checked out the Outtakers in our Smile Shop, you will surely also have noticed the storage box. This is highly recommended if you want to store the splint optimally – also for transport. Please note, however, that the aligners should only be stored in the box when cleaned and rinsed with cold or lukewarm water before the next use.
